Banknotes of the Samurai!

A fantastic addition to any collection, this set comprises three genuine banknotes from the age of Japan’s legendary Samurai!

The hereditary military nobility of feudal Japan, Samurai became the model of the ideal warrior and citizen. Famous for loyalty, courage and indifference to pain, the Samurai ultimately became Japan’s key political force. The changing nature of war reduced the Samurai’s power over time. By the 19th century, the government sought to integrate these once mighty warriors into society, and reduce their prestige, influence and fame. Some legends never die, however, and the aura of the Samurai continues to burn brightly in both Japanese and global popular culture.

Vertical in format and defined by elaborate calligraphy, Japan’s first banknotes were issued circa 1600. Graded Fine to Extremely Fine, the three notes found in this set are among the last of their kind, with feudal notes being abolished after the Meiji Revolution in 1868 – representing the end of the Golden Age of the Samurai.

Issued from 1863 to 1869, we have just a few sets available – click add to cart now!
