Prestigious and rare, the Nero Gold Aureus before you was issued circa 66-67AD – towards the end of Nero’s reign. Struck at the mint in Rome, it bears the distinctive portrait of Nero upon the obverse, with the reverse depicting Salus – a goddess overseeing the safety and wellbeing of the individual and the state. This is rather ironic, as Salus certainly didn’t safeguard the emperor! Not long after this coin was struck, Nero’s reign ended with his overthrow and suicide.
