Silver of the Batavian Republic

A greatly admired coin, with maritime types among the most popular in numismatics, the 1802 Silver Gulden was issued for the Netherlands East Indies during the short-lived Batavian Republic.

The successor to the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands, the Batavian Republic was established in 1795 through intervention by French revolutionary forces. Before replaced in 1806 by the ‘Kingdom of Holland’,  ruled by Napoleon Bonaparte’s brother, Louis, the republic maintained Dutch commercial interests in the East Indies – which included the issuance of coins.

Bearing an enchanting design of a sailing ship, the Batavian Republic sterling silver Gulden was a respected trade coin – readily accepted in Australia’s currency-starved colony.
