The Gold Ducat – respected worldwide

Originating in Venice, and with a weight and purity considered ideal for trade, the Ducat was so popular that many countries copied the type. The Netherlands began striking the Ducat in the 16th century, imitating the early Hungarian type. The Kingdom of Holland under King Louis I – Napoleon Bonaparte’s brother – continued to strike the Ducat,  employing the traditional design of a Knight holding  seven arrows representing the seven provinces.
