The Netherlands Silver 10 Stuivers type was one of a wild mix of foreign coins that circulated during the first days of modern Australia. These are known as ‘Coins of the Proclamation Era’. Used by the earliest European settlers, and therefore genuine artefacts of Australia’s earliest colonial period, the Coins of the Proclamation Era are hugely important from both an historical and a numismatic perspective.

A ‘first year’ issue, struck for the province of Holland, the 1748 Silver 10 Stuivers had a tiny mintage. Approximately 193,000 sterling silver 10 Stuivers coins were struck! A lower denomination, subject to heavy circulation both in the Netherlands and its overseas colonial possessions, only the tiniest percentage from that mintage would be in anything like the spectacular state of preservation seen here.
