Struck a year after Julius Caesar’s assassination, this genuine 2,000+ year old Ancient Roman silver coin is a genuine artefact of one of the most tumultuous, most important periods of European history.

A richly symbolic and remarkably affordable type, this denarius was issued under the moneyer Publius Accoleius Lariscolus. Little is known of this particular Roman administrator, but there are some fascinating connections between his family and the subject of the coin – Diana, goddess of wild animals, hunting and childbirth.

On the obverse of the coin, we find a portrait of Diana Nemorensis – Diana of the Wood. On the reverse, we see a ‘triple cult statue’ of Diana, drawing together Diana, Hecate and Selene. Behind the three figures is a representation of a cypress grove, and this refers directly to one of the most important places of Ancient worship of Diana, on the shores of Lake Nemi.

Sailed by emperors Tiberius and Caligula, and known as ‘Diana’s Mirror’, Lake Nemi was sacred to the goddess, Diana Nemorensis. It is believed that it was from this area that the moneyer’s family – gens Accoleia – hailed, hence the choice of Diana for the designs of this silver denarius. A sacred grove was located nearby, in Aricia, thus the depiction of cypress on the reverse. Interestingly, this coin type played a significant role in the reconstruction and understanding of the worship of Diana.

A vibrant insight into the pagan religion of Ancient Rome, this remarkably affordable coin is graded Fine. Click add to cart now!
