Governor of Syria, Niger proclaimed himself emperor in 193AD, the Year of the Five Emperors. Defeated in the civil war against Septimius Severus, Niger was captured and beheaded. Reigning only from April 193 to May 194, Niger’s coinage is scarce to rare in all grades.
