Testimony to the trust and respect that Athenian coinage commanded across the known world, many regions copied the Owl Drachm – including Philistia (Palestine).
A fine example, this Ancient Palestinian imitation was struck 450BC to 400BC, and as Athens only began minting Owls circa 500BC, this indicates how quickly the coin was embraced. Naturally depicting Athena and her owl, the coin also bears the inscription AOE – ‘of the Athenians’.
