An Australian ‘Proclamation Era’ coin!

A major maritime power, Portugal's gold coins circulated worldwide, and were crucial to the infant colony of New South Wales. Indeed, Portugal’s Gold Johanna was the highest valued coin listed in Governor Philip Gidley King’s Proclamation of 1800 – Australia's first currency system – and the Gold Half Johannas are known as Coins of the Proclamation Era.

Rare and beautiful in equal part…

Struck in tiny numbers, with many melted for the intrinsic value, the Portuguese-Brazil Half Johanna is extremely rare. As exemplified by the stunning coin offered here, this majestic type is also extremely beautiful. Bearing the distinctive Portuguese Shield on the reverse, this magnificent Australian colonial type is distinguished by the conjoined portraits of Maria and Peter upon the obverse.

Excessively rare in Uncirculated quality!

With mintages low, and so many coins melted for the gold, there are many rare Half Johanna dates – including the 1784R. Issued during the joint reign of Maria and Peter, and scarce in any grade, the 1784R Half Johanna is a great rarity in Uncirculated quality, as here.
