The Portuguese-Brazilian Gold Half Johanna was included in the Proclamation of 1800 - Australia's first currency system. It is a truly beautiful coin, struck from nearly half an ounce of 22-carat gold. It is always highly sought-after, but never more so than when bearing the date 1788 - the year of European Settlement!

The currency used in the early days of colonial Australia had an international flavour beautifully epitomised by the Portuguese-Brazilian Gold Half Johanna. Although struck in extremely limited numbers, the Gold Half Johanna was a readily accepted international trade coin, circulating around the world.

Naturally enough, this key coin made its way to Britain's new southern outpost. It circulated extensively amid the wild mix of foreign currency, rum and worthless promissory notes that supported the haphazard colonial economy. The Portuguese-Brazilian Gold Half Johanna was considered significant enough to be included in the Proclamation of 1800 at a value of £2. Today, it is one of the building blocks upon which the study of Australian numismatics has been built.

Sought-after for the great beauty, rich history and unquestionable rarity, we have one Gold Half Johanna struck during the reign of Queen Maria I of Portugal available. Assessed by leading 3rd party verifier Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), this superb example has been graded at MS61 - the equivalent of strictly Uncirculated quality. Underpinned by a superb strike, lustrous, reflective surfaces and a strong portrait of Queen Maria, this is a truly supreme example. The ill-fated Queen was said to collapse into insanity after the death of her husband, Pedro.

Just as important as the flawless quality is the date the coin was struck. This exquisite coin was struck in 1788, the year of European Settlement. A must-have for the serious collector, or anyone with a passionate interest in Australian history, this glorious gold coin is sure to be snapped up at speed.
