One of the most symbolic banknotes of Australia’s first national currency system, the 1936 R11 Riddle/Sheehan 10/- Banknote was the very last Ten Shillings issued during the reign of King George V.
An important reminder of a very different Australia, as the nation lurched from the economic turmoil of the Great Depression towards the trauma and fear of the Second World War, this key type was first issued in 1936 – the year of the king’s death. It was introduced largely as a result of widespread dissatisfaction with the colour of its immediate predecessors – all of which were brown – and the consequent confusion with the £1. Printed in blazing orange, the last 10/- note of King George V is scarce in all grades.
In large part, the scarcity is due to the fact that the Ten Shillings – or Ten Bob, as it was known – was Australia’s lowest denomination predecimal note. The 10/- naturally endured a much greater circulation rate than high denomination notes, and, on average, was withdrawn and destroyed in Treasury furnaces after approximately 12-15 months. Combined with the passage of time, and the number simply lost, this has ensured that all George V 10/- notes are scarce, regardless of the condition – and rare in the upper echelons of quality. The 1936 R11 Riddle/Sheehan 10/- is an excellent case-in-point.
