Due to turmoil in Europe, Britain was unable or unwilling to supply coinage in any quantity to Australia after settlement in 1788. Rum was the primary medium of exchange, along with promissory notes, and coins from places as far flung as Britain, India, the Netherlands and Spain – including the Spanish Silver ‘Pillar’ Dollar. It was difficult to determine the relative worth of this wild mix of currency, until Governor Philip Gidley King used the Proclamation of 1800 to assign fixed values to the main coins then in use.
