As a result of the economic downturn, demand for new coinage in Australia fell dramatically, with the Melbourne Mint largely idle during this period. There were no threepences or sixpences struck from 1929 to 1932, for example, and there were no pennies struck in 1930 – or so it was thought. It is now accepted that perhaps 3,000 pennies were produced in 1930, in the process of testing coin dies.
