Born during what is known as The Anarchy – a period of civil conflict in England fought between King Stephen and rivals for his throne – Marshal was the younger son of a minor nobleman. Unlikely to inherit wealth or land, he was dispatched to Normandy, where he was trained as a knight, with extensive instruction in horsemanship, and the use of sword and lance.

Whilst domiciled in Normandy, Marshal found his true calling. It was there that he won his first of many tournaments – staged, dangerous, occasionally deadly battles where wealth and honour were at stake. Ultimately, Marshal became a legendary tournament champion, and on his deathbed, he recalled defeating more than 500 knights during his career.

Depicting William Marshal during a joust, the supreme discipline of knightly competitions, the most remarkable element of this 99.99% pure silver tribute is the perspective. The inspired design allows us to witness this duel from William Marshal's point of view, through his visor. The employment of a concave reverse enhances the scene, conveying the speed, tension and intensity of the tournament. The obverse not only features Marshal bowing before the crowd, as was customary after victory in a tournament, but also features his official title along the rim at the top of the coin.

With a mere 750 coins available worldwide, and our allocation tiny, immediate action is vital.
