roman-silver-coin-with-tropaion-motif
Roman Silver Coin with Tropaion Motif

The “tropaeum”, or “trophy”, was minted on Roman coins to celebrate a military victory. It is a stake or wooden frame on which the weapons and armor of the defeated enemies were hung. Two prisoners of war were often depicted to the left and right of the tropaeum. The motif is particularly significant for Roman society because slaves made up a large part of the population and were essential to the economic power of the empire. The origin or ethnicity of the prisoners can often be identified from small details or inscriptions. In the case of Gallienus (253–268 AD), they could be members of the Germanic tribal confederation of the Alemanni, whose invasion he repelled between 258 and 260, as the coin bears the inscription “GERMANICUS”. This collection includes a silver coin with a tropaion motif and a certificate of authenticity, as well as a high-quality folding card.
