The rare Gold Johanna – the Prize of the Proclamation
The currency used in early colonial Australia had an international flavour – epitomised by the Portuguese-Brazilian 1722-33 Gold Johanna. Struck in extremely limited numbers, the Johanna was a readily accepted international trade coin, circulating around the world. Naturally enough, this key coin made its way to Britain's new southern outpost.
Struck from nearly 1oz of 22-carat gold, the Johanna was part of a wild mix of foreign currency, rum and worthless promissory notes that supported the haphazard colonial economy – but it was the most valuable. Indeed, it was considered significant enough to be included in the Proclamation at a value of £4.
Sought after for the beauty, history and rarity, we have one 1728M Gold Johanna available. Assessed by NGC, this particular coin has been graded at AU50, and is distinguished by strong detail in the designs and a rich golden lustre. The compulsory centrepiece of any serious Proclamation Collection, this great Australian colonial rarity is sure to be snapped up at speed.
