One of the most important dates of the 1855-1931 Australian Sovereign Series, the 1871S Shield was the first of the 1871-87 Shield Sovereigns!

In 1870, Britain demanded that the Sydney Mint replace the designs used for the 1855-70 Sydney Mint Sovereign with British motifs. The Mint was given the option to strike sovereigns bearing either the St George & the Dragon motif or the Shield design – or both.

Ultimately, the Mint chose to strike both types, and the coin before you was the first date issued bearing the classic Shield design by the Royal Mint’s French engraver, Jean Baptiste Merlen. The obverse is distinguished by the magnificent Young Head portrait of Queen Victoria, created by Royal Mint chief engraver William Wyon.

Part of a recent hoard find, we have the 1871S Shield Sovereign in better-than-usually-seen quality – graded by leading independent 3rd party coin verifiers Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) at XF45. Click add to cart now!
