A genuine coin of Alexander III

This is your chance to own a genuine silver coin of the beloved medieval Scottish king, Alexander III – rival and ally of the legendary English king, Edward I.

A strong leader – and a controversial figure…

Alexander’s long reign was generally peaceful, as the monarch was both wise and determined to protect his people. He was a controversial figure, however, and it was said in the medieval Chronicle of Lanercost that, after his wife died in 1275, "he used never to forbear on account of season nor storm, nor for perils of flood or rocky cliffs, but would visit none too creditably nuns or matrons, virgins or widows as the fancy seized him, sometimes in disguise." The end of Alexander’s reign tends to bear out the chronicler’s description.

The Death of the King…

On the eve of the birthday of his second wife, Yolande de Dreux, who he had just wed, Alexander spent the early part of the night celebrating. Having consumed a large amount of alcohol, and despite being advised not to make the journey, Alexander was determined to leave Edinburgh and ride to Fife to visit his new queen.

On what was reported to be a particularly dark and stormy night, Alexander became separated from his guides. It is assumed his horse lost its footing in the dark, and the 44-year-old Alexander plunged off a cliff and broke his neck. His demise led to a period of extreme instability in Scotland, and ultimately to war with England.
