Playing a key role in Australian history, the Spanish-American Silver 8 Reales, or Piece of Eight, commands a place in every collection. Especially when bearing the date 1788 and in original Uncirculated quality!

The 39mm Silver 8 Reales was the leading international trade coin in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its colourful history conjures images of bloodthirsty pirates, shipwrecks and buried treasure. An international commodity, it naturally found its way to Australian shores with European settlement. It was deemed so important that it was included in the Proclamation of 1800 - Australia's first currency system.

The Silver 8 Reales' long-term fame in this country was cemented just over a decade later in 1813. When a currency shortage threatened the colony of NSW, it was the 8 Reales that was used to make the rare Holey Dollar & Dump.

Seldom seen in the superb quality available here, we have available one example of the 8 Reales in much-better-than-usually-seen quality. Struck at the prolific Spanish colonial mint in Mexico, in the year of European Settlement of Australia, this is your chance to secure a genuine, 1788-dated 8 Reales in sparkling Uncirculated condition.
