Struck from 56.56 grams of sparkling sterling silver, this ‘double weight’ Piedfort coin has been issued to honour the 500-year period the Royal Mint was domiciled in the Tower of London.
The Tower of London and the Royal Mint
The establishment of the Royal Mint is considered to have taken place in 886AD, when Alfred the Great recaptured London from the Danelaw and began issuing silver pennies bearing his portrait. Centralised control of Britain’s mints was placed in the hands of the mint found in the Tower of London in 1279, and by the reign of Henry VIII (1509-47), little coin production took place outside London. The Royal Mint remained domiciled in the Tower of London until 1812, when moved to purpose-built premises on Tower Hill – thus ending a chapter of British history that lasted well over 500 years.
‘Double Weight’ Piedfort!
A magnificent tribute to the Royal Mint and the Tower of London, this one-year-only £5 is a ‘Piedfort’ – meaning ‘heavy weight’. Struck to the Royal Mint’s Proof quality, the diameter of the coin is the same as a standard silver £5, but the flan is DOUBLE the weight and much thicker. A fine work of numismatic craftsmanship, the reverse depicts Britain’s classic medieval silver penny bearing the inscription ‘Civitas London’ (City of London) with a Norman arched window in the background. As with each coin in the series, the Tower of London mintmark is also found on the reverse.
