The Tower of London – infamous prison

The 2020 Tower of London Collection concludes with a coin that explores the darker side of the Tower’s history – as an infamous prison. Throughout the centuries, the Tower of London has played the role of a prison for monarchs and commoners alike, but some ‘stays’ were less pleasant than others. Famous prisoners of the Tower include Anne Boleyn, Guy Fawkes and even Princess Elizabeth, who was later crowned Elizabeth I.

An official tribute…

Struck to Brilliant Uncirculated standards, the 38.61mm flan of this unique £5 coin forms the perfect canvas for the richly symbolic design. Featuring a Norman arched window in the background, along with the Tower of London mintmark, the reverse features the arresting inscription ‘MY LIBERTIE DENIED’. These words are taken from carved ‘graffiti’ attributed to Thomas Miagh, a prisoner at the Tower who was held but never charged.
