Opening the window to Australia’s golden heritage, we have a tiny number of the Two Kings 1902-18 Gold Half Sovereign Pair available!
Tiny mintages!
While all early Australian gold coins are scarce, Half Sovereigns are notoriously tough-to-find. In large part, this is simply due to the number struck. The mintages are astonishingly low. Indeed, there was approximately only one half sovereign struck for every ten sovereigns produced, and in many years the mintages were well under 100,000. In terms of circulating coin production, such mintages are breathtakingly small, but even the bare figures do not tell the whole story of the extreme scarcity of the Half Sovereign today.
Melted down in the thousands!
With the half sovereign a lower denomination, it suffered a higher circulation rate than the sovereign, and therefore greater wear and tear. As the authorities had a responsibility to maintain the standard of circulating currency, coins suffering wear were withdrawn from circulation and recycled to mint new coins – a fate suffered by literally hundreds of thousands of Half Sovereigns over the years. When you also consider the huge number of coins lost to the private profiteer’s melting pot in the 103 years since the last Half Sovereign was struck, it’s no shock that so many dates in the 1855-1918 series are scarce to rare across the grades.
