The last of its kind, the 1946-64 Roosevelt Dime was the last USA dime struck in silver. Bearing the portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt – considered one of the three greatest American Presidents – we have this key type available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition!
Honouring Franklin D. Roosevelt
The Roosevelt Dime was introduced in 1946, replacing the Mercury Dime. It was decided to honour President FD Roosevelt, who had led the country through the Great Depression and virtually all of the Second World War before his death in 1945. The portrayal of Roosevelt was well received, but the coin was also the subject of much controversy.
A coin of great controversy
Firstly, the designer John Sinnock was accused of basing Roosevelt’s portrait on the work of sculptor Selma Burke. Secondly, and more amusingly, when the coin was released into circulation many believed that it was a subversive tribute to communist Russia! It was alleged that ‘JS’ on the obverse (the initials of designer John Sinnock) actually stood for Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin! It was further alleged that they had been secretly engraved on the die by a communist sympathiser at the US Mint!
