Rare gold of ‘King Billy of the Boyne’

Completing the picture of the early days of England’s Gold Guinea Series, we have the excessively rare 1700 Guinea of King William III  (1694-1702) – nephew and successor to James II.

‘Invited’ by Parliament to overthrow the last Catholic king, William took the crown after defeating James at the Battle of the Boyne. William ruled jointly with Queen Mary (James’ sister) until 1694, and alone until his death in 1702. Gold Guineas of William’s brief reign are rare in any grade – and a rarity of the highest order when found in good Very Fine, as here.

The penultimate date of the William III Guinea series, this immensely rare 1700 Gold Guinea bears a detailed rendering of William’s ‘Roman nose’ profile, and a strong reverse.
