WWII was a pivotal time for Australia. Our country was flung into the chaos of conflict, across multiple corners of the globe. Downies can now bring you the essential conduit to that milestone period: the superb WWII Australian Historical Portfolio! This richly informative presentation comprises a whopping 17 pieces of original and replica memorabilia - the perfect way to journey through these challenging but formative years.

Start your journey in Europe

The First Great War was not easy on any of the powers involved. But for Germany, struggling to survive the punitive list of demands stipulated in the Armistice Treaty, life was especially tough. This harsh economic and social climate saw the country crying out for new leadership - and in 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor.

Hitler's austere portrait can be seen on the genuine 1941 6 Riechspfennig stamp, included in this portfolio. This - together with the German 1939-40 1 Reichspfennig coin, Replica Wound Badge, Russian 1939 10 Kopek Stamp and British 1939-45 Halfpenny - paints a grim picture of a world at the outbreak of war.

Continue through the Mediterranean and North Africa

The Allied powers were determined to keep Egypt and the Suez Canal within their grasp. But this plan was thrown into jeopardy when an Italian-German army besieged the critical town of Tobruk, kick-starting a period of gritty, unforgiving trench warfare. When Nazi propogandists learned of this conflict, one broadcaster dismissed the defenders of Tobruk as 'rats'. This moniker was swiftly adopted by the Australian soldiers as an ironic badge of honour, earning the Rats of Tobruk world-wide fame.

A faithful Rats of Tobruk Medal replica is included in this portfolio, instantly connecting you with those who reigned triumphant during the siege. An Italian 20 Centesmi coin and Greek 500,000 Drachmas note are also compelling mementoes of conflict that occurred far beyond the Western Front.

A war closer to home: The Pacific Theatre

The early 1940s saw a discernible shift in attitudes towards the War. Prime Minister Robert Menzies resigned in 1941, kick-starting a turbulent period in Australian politics. Eventually, John Curtin of the ALP was elected Prime Minister - and he held a very different view. Japan began to dominate in the pacific, a story deftly told by The Burma 1/2 Rupee Japanese Invasion Money included in this collection. Curtin's concern grew. Fear of a Japanese Invasion was rampant. He favoured ties with the United States over Britain, and declared WWII 'the War for Australia'.

Recapture Curtin's renewed partnership, with the original US 1944 1c Coin and 1942 3c stamps included in this set.

The war at home

An elegant portrayal of Peace as an Angel, wings outstretched. A young couple crouched at ground level, before a backdrop of the Southern Cross. Tying these elements together in a beautifully-composed final artwork, the Australia 1945 Peace Stamp is not only visually stunning, it's also historically significant, issued as the final curtain fell on WWII.

Joining this in your WWII Australian Historical Portfolio, an original Australian Penny and Shilling transport you back to home soil during the conflict. You'll also discover a replica of a token used at the Internment Camps at Hay, NSW, connecting you with Prisoners of War detained in one of its high-security facilities. Times were tough and measures were put in place to cut spending during the conflict, as the replica Ration Tickets will attest. Together, these elements form an incredible historical artefact destined to delight any history enthusiast or militaria buff.
