Queen Elizabeth II is the most famous monarch in the world. She is nevertheless regarded as a symbol of continuity and dutiful action for the benefit of her subjects. Even today, she fulfills her duties and representational obligations with the utmost bravura and is also the most widely traveled head of state in world history. With admirable bravery and her own constancy, the Queen ensures that the monarchy is still desired by the majority of the British population in the 21st century. In 2008, the Bank of England issued a new, innovative coin set for the first time. While the 1 Pound coin shows the royal coat of arms in its entirety, the six smaller denominations (1 Penny to 50 Pence) each show a part of the shield. Properly grouped, these coins also produce the “Royal Shield of Arms” motif.
The three coins with the largest diameters form the corners of the shield, the three smaller ones fill up the middle. The coin set is therefore often referred to as the “Shield” set. In the competition for the design of the new coin set, the design by Welsh graphic artist Matthew Dent won out. The (fourth) portrait of the Queen was designed by British sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. In addition to this impressive coin set, this folder also contains a crown-sized commemorative coin for the 25th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne.
