A fresh start in Australia
Relocating to Australia, Phil and his wife Zita opened the Myer Philatelic Bureau in 1939 inย Melbourne's bustling Bourke Street. The bureau flourished under their care, evolving from a stamp-focused venture into a treasure trove of collectables, including rare coins, banknotes and militaria. Downies became a multi-generational family business when Philโs son Ken joined the company inย 1977. Kenโs vision and passion for numismatics created a greater focus on coins, both new and old.
Pioneering numismatic auction house
1963 marked the birth of Downies' auction business, Australiaโs longest running numismatic auctionย house! A groundbreaking venture that transformed the company into Australiaโs go-to numismaticsย hub. Today, Downies Australian Coin Auctions (ACA) is a celebrated name, known for its exciting qualityย auctions that attract enthusiasts both in-person and online. In 2005, Downies was appointed by theย Reserve Bank of Australia to auction its entire collection of rare gold coins, in the most famous sale ofย its kind in Australian numismatic history.

In 1977 Philโs son, Ken Downie, took the helm of the company infusing a fresh energy and vision. Kenย introduced the publication 'Spotlight on Numismatics' in 1984, now known as the revered 'Money'ย magazine.
