Struck exactly 150 years ago, the two sovereigns found in this set represent some of the most beloved, iconic designs in history. Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George motif is a masterpiece of neo‐classical art, whilst the armorial magnificence of Jean Baptiste Merlen’s Shield design is famous worldwide. Both coins bear the original effigy of Queen Victoria – the exquisite Young Head portrait by William Wyon, enshrining the youthful beauty of the monarch in 22‐carat gold.

Low mintages – very scarce in any grade …
Australian sovereigns of Queen Victoria were issued in numbers considered tiny by modern standards. The 1873 St George & Shield Sovereigns were no exception to the rule. Importantly, in the 150 years since struck, a vast majority have been lost, withdrawn from circulation and recycled, or melted for the gold value. As they were genuine circulation coins, surviving examples tend to be well‐worn, meaning that Queen Victoria sovereigns are generally scarce in better grade.
