Issued less than a decade into the long reign of Queen Elizabeth II, Australia’s last predecimal notes were issued under the auspices of the Reserve Bank of Australia. Including Australia’s traditional banknote denominations of 10/-, £1, £5 and £10, these notes carried the nation’s most enduring signature combination, Coombs/Wilson. Radically different in design to the notes of her predecessors, King George V and King George VI, the Elizabeth II notes each carried a different portrait. That scarcity is largely due to the passage of time, and the enormous number of notes withdrawn from circulation and destroyed by the Commonwealth Government – a phenomenon that was particularly apparent during the changeover from predecimal to decimal currency in 1966. More specifically, the 10/- and £1 notes were low denominations, and were subject to a very high rate of circulation. The short lifespan of these notes has led to the current challenge in securing them in pristine condition, as presented here. The £5 and £10 are even rarer, but for quite a different reason. As Australia’s highest circulating denominations at that time, these notes represented far too much spending power for most people to nonchalantly pop aside as a memento.
