Gold Rush history you can hold in your hands, the 1855-70 Sydney Mint Sovereign Series plays a crucial role in the history of Australian currency. Australia’s first sovereign series, struck at Australia’s first official mint, any and every Sydney Mint Sovereign date is highly sought after – particularly in the upper echelons of quality. A rare opportunity, we have the 1867 Sydney Mint Sovereign in Uncirculated condition!
As the Sydney Mint was created in direct response to the discovery of gold in the 1850s, coins from the 1855-70 Sydney Mint Sovereign Series represent physical evidence of Australia’s Gold Rush heritage. Bearing the distinctive ‘Wreath’ design, with ‘SYDNEY MINT’, ‘AUSTRALIA’ and ‘ONE SOVEREIGN’ proudly emblazoned upon the reverse, the coins of this pioneering series also represent a bold statement of Australia’s developing identity, and the beginning of our march to nationhood.
Naturally, some 150+ years after being struck, all Sydney Mint Sovereigns are scarce to rare today. Apart from those simply lost to the mists of time, literally millions have been melted down for the gold value. Of those coins surviving the profiteer’s melting pot, most are very well worn – only a tiny number remain in the startling state of preservation apparent here.
Underpinned by excellent detail in the designs and a lovely golden lustre, the single 1867 Sydney Mint Sovereign we have available has been graded by leading independent 3rd party coin verifiers Numismatic Guaranty Company at MS61 – the equivalent of Uncirculated condition.
