A genuine artefact of the finals days of “the war to end all wars”, we are proud to present the Perth Mint’s 1918P Gold Sovereign.
The gold sovereigns struck in Australia from 1914 to 1918 are more than just currency. They are living history, giving the collector to opportunity to create a strong bond with those who served Australia during the First World War. The 1918P Gold Sovereign represents a particularly poignant example of this phenomenon.
The 1918P Gold Sovereign was struck in the last year of the war – the year the Armistice was signed, and the guns finally fell silent, signalling an end to four years of slaughter. While sparking scenes of jubilation across Australia, thoughts inevitably turned to those who would never be coming home. An ‘Emblem of Empire’, the gold sovereigns of the era form a powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who did their duty during Australia’s Baptism of Fire
Beyond its importance as a richly symbolic reminder of Australia’s WWI heroes, the Perth Mint’s 1918P Gold Sovereign is a coin of immense aesthetic quality. The reverse is distinguished by the timeless beauty of Benedetto Pistrucci’s neo-classical masterpiece, St George & the Dragon. Upon the obverse, you will find the noble portrait of King George V, designed by Australian artist Bertram Mackennal.
With all First World War sovereigns scarce today – in part due to the low mintages, in part due to the number melted for the gold in the 100+ years since struck – the opportunity to secure the 1918P Gold Sovereign in premium grade must be grasped with both hands.
