In the aftermath of the conflict, the efforts of Labor politician ‘Doc’ Evatt saw Australia play a key role in the foundation of the UN, created specifically to promote global peace. Australia’s role ‘on the ground’ began in 1947, when four observers took part in the UN’s first peacekeeping mission, overseeing a 1947 ceasefire between nationalist and Dutch forces in what is now Indonesia. Since then, tens of thousands of Australians have participated in peacekeeping missions all over the world.
Struck by the Royal Australian Mint, the 2022 Peacekeeping $2 is highly sought after – as with all full-colour $2 commemoratives. The series is the hottest in Australian numismatics, with every colour $2 hoarded out of circulation.
