The first coin issued by the Perth Mint, struck in the year that the Mint was launched, the Queen Victoria 1899P Gold Sovereign is among the most sought after Australian gold sovereigns.
Apart from being the first of its kind, the 1899P Sovereign is notable as the Perth Mint’s scarcest, lowest mintage sovereign. The brainchild of Western Australian Premier Sir John Forrest, the creation of the Perth Mint had always been a subject of controversy. With debate still raging over its very existence, and businesses and banks still preferring to send raw gold either to the east coast or London, Western Australia’s fledgling mint only had the capacity to produce 690,992 sovereigns in its first year of operation.
This tiny figure places the 1899P Sovereign as one of the lowest mintage Australian sovereign issues of Queen Victoria’s reign. And with a vast majority of coins from the tiny mintage lost, withdrawn from circulation or melted for the intrinsic value, the 1899P Sovereign is scarce in any grade.
