Struck from 22-carat gold, this Australian legal tender coin is distinguished by a superb reimagining of Pistrucci’s masterpiece, St George & the Dragon. One of the world’s most famous works of numismatic art, the St George motif was employed upon gold coinage struck in Australia from 1871 until 1931. A key element of the Perth Mint’s 125-year history, the St George design was the ONLY reverse motif used on gold coinage from the opening of the Mint in 1899 until the last sovereign was struck in 1931. The 2024 $5 Quarter Sovereign Gold Proof is, therefore, an entirely appropriate tribute to the Mint’s 125th anniversary.
