A genuine artefact of the Australian Gold Rush, and a landmark date in Australia’s long, rich currency history, the 1866 Sydney Mint Half Sovereign is the very last date of the Sydney Mint Half Sovereign Series.
Australia’s first Half Sovereign Series, struck at the nation’s first official mint, Sydney Mint Half Sovereigns were struck only from 1855 to 1866. As with all half sovereign dates, the mintages were incredibly low. Indeed, there was only one Sydney Mint Half Sovereign struck for every SIX full sovereigns! In the case of the 1866 Sydney Mint Half Sovereign, the mintage was a tiny 154,000 coins. With so few struck, and so many sacrificed to the profiteer’s melting pot for the gold value, it will come as no shock that this 160-year-old coin is scarce in any condition today.
A wonderful opportunity for you to secure a crucial, last-of-its-kind date, we have just one example of the 1866 Sydney Mint Half Sovereign available.
