A landmark issue of the Australian 1855-1918 Gold Half Sovereign Series, we are proud to present the Melbourne Mint’s 1887M Gold Half Sovereign – in rarely seen Choice Uncirculated condition!
In 1887, Britain and its Empire celebrated the 50th anniversary of the reign of Queen Victoria, and a new coinage portrait was unveiled to coincide with the event. Created by Joseph Edgar Boehm, the highly distinctive, somewhat controversial portrait of the long-reigning Queen was employed on coinage only from 1887 to 1893. This included the 1887M Gold Half Sovereign – the first issue of the Jubilee Series, and one of only two Jubilee Half Sovereigns struck at the Melbourne Branch of the Royal Mint.
In 1887, the Melbourne Mint produced a grand total of 64,000 Half Sovereigns – an astonishingly small output, especially compared to the nearly three million sovereigns the Mint struck in that year. Even that minuscule Half Sovereign mintage figure does not tell the whole story. In 1887, the Mint struck BOTH Young Head AND Jubilee Half Sovereigns, with the 64,000-coin mintage encompassing both types!
It is unknown exactly how many 1887M Jubilee Half Sovereigns the Mint struck, but the number is obviously tiny. The number in existence today must be infinitesimal, and the number in the state of preservation seen here? A mere handful. In breathtaking condition, the single example we have available is in magnificent Choice Uncirculated quality, with sharply detailed designs complemented by a lustrous golden glow.
