1899P & 1931P – the First & the Last

An enthralling journey to the heart of Australia’s golden heritage, this prestigious presentation unites the FIRST and LAST Perth Mint Sovereign dates – the Queen Victoria 1899P Gold Sovereign and King George V 1931P Gold Sovereign!

Established to transform the rich bounty of the WA goldfields into coins of the realm, the Perth Mint was opened amid much fanfare on 20 June 1899. With much of Western Australia’s gold still flowing to the east, the Mint’s first coin – the 1899P Sovereign – had a mintage of just 690,992. The lowest mintage Perth Mint sovereign date, and the lowest mintage Queen Victoria Veiled Head Sovereign, the 1899P is a key to the Australian Sovereign Series – as is the 1931.

Sought after as ‘the last of its kind’, the 1931P Sovereign features the short-lived Modified Portrait of George V, employed only from 1929 to 1931. As with every Perth Mint Sovereign, the last coin in the Australian Sovereign Series is distinguished by Pistrucci’s neo-classical masterpiece, St George & the Dragon. It’s also distinguished by the second lowest mintage of the Perth Mint Sovereign series! A mere 1,173,568 coins were struck!

The perfect Perth Mint pair, the 1899P Sovereign and 1931P Sovereign are presented in Very Fine to about Uncirculated condition – set in a timber case with a Certificate of Authenticity. Click add to cart now!
