Struck in 1913, just one year before the storm clouds broke over Europe, and tens of thousands of Australians bravely marched off to defend the Empire, we have one example of the Sydney Mint’s King George V 1913S Gold Sovereign available.
A prestigious acquisition for any collector, this important coin was struck in 1913 at the Sydney Mint – Australia’s first official mint. Struck from lustrous 22-carat gold, and spanning 22.05mm in diameter, the 1913S Sovereign features Benedetto Pistrucci’s neo-classical masterpiece St George & the Dragon upon the reverse. Designed by Australian artist, Sir Bertram Mackennal, the portrait of King George V adorns the obverse.
Bearing the Sydney Mint’s S mintmark, the sovereigns of 1913 are typical of all early George V Sovereigns – scarce in better grade. This is largely attributable to the fact that 1913 Sovereigns were issued at a time when gold coins were still used in general circulation, before the financial crisis engendered by WWI spelt the doom of gold as circulating currency. Thus, the vast majority of surviving pre-WWI sovereigns are well worn. With the natural scarcity intensified by the number melted for the intrinsic value over the years, the 1913S Gold Sovereign is tough-to-find in better grade – as here.
Superbly presented within a timber case with a Certificate of Authenticity, the single 1913S Gold Sovereign available is in premium grade Uncirculated condition. Click add to cart now!
