Struck at the Calcutta Mint in India during the final year of the First World War, the 1918I Halfpenny is one of the key dates of the entire Australian 1910-64 Predecimal Series.

Australia’s first national coinage was struck at mints in Great Britain. When the stormclouds of war broke over Europe in 1914, the danger to British shipping forced a change in policy. From 1916, production of Australia’s silver coinage took place on Australian shores, with the nation’s copper coinage struck at the Calcutta Mint in India. Struck only from 1916 to 1918, the Australian copper coins were distinguished by the Mint’s ‘I’ (India) mintmark below the scroll on the reverse.

The last date struck in India was also the lowest mintage Calcutta issue, with the mintage of the 1918I Halfpenny being 1.44 million. Although not among the lowest mintages of the series, this crucial George V issue is scarce in any condition. Graded by leading independent coin verifiers Professional Coin Grading Service as Cleaned Unc Detail, and distinguished by a full centre diamond and eight clear pearls upon the King’s crown, we have just one example available.
