A triumph of numismatic art, the Perth Mint’s 1923P Gold Sovereign is notable for the presence of Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George & the Dragon motif. A work of timeless beauty, Pistrucci’s neo-classical masterpiece is united with the portrait of King George V – designed by Australian artist Bertram Mackennal. With the mintage closed at little more than two million – tiny by modern standards – it is understandable that the 1923P Sovereign is scarce today. Even that meagre mintage reveal the whole story, however.
The global economic crisis triggered by the First World War sounded the death knell for gold as a circulating medium. Transformed from a standard coin, used in everyday transactions, to an international trading commodity, sovereigns were treated as gold bullion, with millions of 1920s sovereigns melted down for the intrinsic value. Thus, with an unknown but huge number falling victim to the melting pot, all sovereigns struck in the postwar period are scarce today.
