Struck more than a century ago, during the reign of King George V, we are proud to present this superbly preserved example of the Perth Mint’s 1923P Gold Sovereign!
A genuine artefact of Roaring 20s Australia, as the nation found its feet after the First World War, the 1923P Gold Sovereign is – like all gold sovereigns – defined by its immense beauty. Distinguished by perhaps the most famous of all coin designs, the reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci’s masterpiece, St George & the Dragon. Upon the obverse, one will find Bertram Mackennal’s portrait of King George V.
Crafted from 22-carat gold, the 1923P Sovereign is unquestionably scarce today. That scarcity is in part due to the tiny mintage, with the Perth Mint striking little more than two million sovereigns in 1923. More importantly, the scarcity is due to the unknown but enormous number that were melted for the intrinsic value.
The global financial crisis triggered by the calamity of the First World War led to the end of gold as a circulating medium. Almost overnight, the sovereign was transformed from a standard coin, used in everyday transactions, to an international trading commodity. As a result, millions of 1920s sovereigns were shipped overseas as gold bullion, and melted down. The Perth Mint’s 1923P would have been no exception to the rule.
