Reflecting the prosperity of the Roaring Twenties, the mintage of the 1925 Florin was a not insubstantial 2.96 million. That mintage figure is minuscule by modern standards, of course, and given the number of coins heavily circulated, melted for the sterling silver value and simply lost over the century since struck, it’s no surprise that this date is scarce in superior quality. The number remaining in the quality seen here would be infinitesimal.
Underpinned by attractive toning, this magnificent example is notable for the sharp detail in the designs – especially the obverse. Designed by Australian artist Bertram Mackennal – one of very few artists King George V actually liked! – the portrait is superb, with a full centre diamond and all eight pearls clearly defined.
