  • Scarce and yet still surprisingly affordable in Very Fine condition.

The 2nd last Ten Shillings Banknote of King George V, issued after the Great Depression, the 1934 10/- Riddle/Sheehan Overprint is scarce yet affordable!

Due to the Great Depression, Australia rejected the Gold Standard – a monetary system where the value Australia’s currency was linked to gold. As a consequence, banknotes were no longer backed by gold and were therefore no longer able to be redeemed for gold, but were instead guaranteed as legal tender by the Commonwealth. All four note denominations were completely redesigned following this decision, creating what is known as the ‘Legal Tender Series’.

There were no particular issues with the new £1, £5 & £10, but the first Ten Shillings note of the Legal Tender Series instantly created chaos. Within a matter of months, the 10/- note had to be modified, following public outcry over its similarity with the £1, leading to the note before you – the second 10/- issue of the Legal Tender Series.

Issued under the Riddle/Sheehan signature combination from the 13th of April 1934 until March of 1936, the second Legal Tender Series 10/- note is distinguished by a ‘TEN SHILLINGS’ overprint on three sides of the obverse. Scarce and yet still surprisingly affordable in Very Fine condition, we have just three examples available. Click add to cart now!
