Undoubtedly among the most important, most distinctive coins in the history of Australian currency, the 1934-35 Centenary Florin is a key element of every collection. Sought after in any grade, it is a must-have when found in strictly Uncirculated condition.
A one-year-only type, the 1934-35 Centenary Florin was issued to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Melbourne and the settlement of Victoria. Whilst the coin honoured the twin centenaries, it also played a role in the event, being sold at a shilling above face value to help pay for the cost of the celebrations.
Struck at the Melbourne Mint in the latter part of the reign of King George V, the 1934-35 Centenary Florin is scarce across all grades – in large part due to the tiny number issued. The mintage was capped at 75,000 coins, but with the Great Depression having an impact on sales, only 54,000 coins were purchased by the public. Somewhat horrifyingly, the remaining 21,000 coins went back to the Melbourne Mint and were melted down!
As a result, this crucial sterling silver type is one of the lowest mintage coins of the 1910-64 Australian predecimal series. The only double-dated Australian predecimal coin, the only predecimal coin with the obverse inscription in English, and the only Australian coin distinguished by Percy Metcalfe’s portrait of George V, the 1934-35 Centenary Florin is also highly sought after as an utterly unique type.
