Issued to celebrate the coronation of King George VI, the ever-popular 1937 Silver Crown is a fundamental element of every Australian collection. This is your chance to add it to your own collection in Uncirculated quality!

Unique, as Australia’s only commemorative Crown, the 1937 Silver Crown was struck at the Melbourne Mint and had a mintage of just over one million. Notable as Australia’s highest predecimal coinage denomination, the five shillings 1937 Crown is also notorious as the nation’s largest ever issued circulating coin. Measuring a massive 38.50mm in diameter, each 1937 Crown comprises nearly an ounce of sterling silver!

Mockingly dubbed ‘Casey’s Cartwheel’ – a derisive nickname referring to R.G. Casey, the Federal Government Minister who had overseen its introduction – the imposing dimensions of the 1937 Crown made it unpopular as a circulation coin. Ironically, it’s the size and weight that make this key type so sought after by collectors. Indeed, it is rightly considered to be the compulsory centrepiece of every Australian predecimal collection.

Importantly, the coin has proved just as popular with precious metal profiteers over the years. Thanks to huge silver price hikes in the 1970s, and in more recent times, the number lost to the melting pot has ensured that Australia’s biggest coin is increasingly scarce.

A great opportunity, we have the 1937 Crown in Uncirculated quality – presented in an illustrated, informative card. Click add to cart now!
