The medal features the cypher of of King George VI surrounded by a circlet containing the inscription โTHE 1939-1945 STARโ, surmounted by a crown on the obverse. The reverse is plain - for inscription of recipientโs details The ribbon comprised three vertical stripes of dark blue, red and light blue, representing the Navy, Army and Air Force respectively.

Instituted on August 16, 1945, the WWII 1939-45 Star was bestowed upon armed forces personnel who had qualified for a specified period of operational service from September 3, 1939 to September 2, 1945.
