The first threepence date struck at the Melbourne Mint – indeed, the first the Mint had struck since 1943 – the 1947 Threepence is notable for the very low mintage. Only the 4.824 million coins were struck in this year, and of those not falling victim to the profiteer’s melting pot, or simply lost, few remain in the spellbinding quality apparent here.
