Elizabeth II 1954 Royal Visit Florin Uncirculated

Celebrating the first tour of Australia by a reigning British monarch, the first Australian commemorative coin issued during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II also turned out to be the last of the 1910-64 Australian predecimal series. A must-have for every Australian collector, we have this unique type in strictly Uncirculated condition!
A one-year-only type, struck at the historic Melbourne Mint, the 1954 Royal Visit Florin carried the highly symbolic Kangaroo & Lion design. The work of leading sculptor William Leslie Bowles, who served in the military throughout WWI and was the power behind many important Australian military monuments, the design created great controversy at the time of issue.
Ironically, at the same time as sparking debate over the reverse design, the 1954 Royal Visit Florin laid a different controversy to rest. This was the first coin to see ‘F:D’ (Defender of the Faith) restored to the obverse inscription – a response to the uproar created by the issue of the ‘godless’ 1953 and 1954 Florins with that part of the legend missing.
