Australia’s first $1 coin – in Proof quality!
A wonderful opportunity to enjoy one of the finest coin designs in Australian history, struck to the finest possible quality, we are delighted to present the 1984 $1 First Dollar Proof Coin!
Representing a major milestone in our currency history, Australia’s first $1 coin was struck by the Royal Australian Mint in 1984. Replacing the traditional $1 banknote due its greater durability and cost-effectiveness, and the first Australian coin struck from aluminium-bronze, the $1 was graced with a Mob of Kangaroos design by iconic numismatic master craftsman, Stuart Devlin. This continued Devlin’s inextricable link with Australian currency, as it was he who created the designs for Australia’s first six decimal coins, launched in 1966.
United with Devlin’s quintessentially Australian reverse design, the obverse carried the original decimal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Arnold Machin. Importantly, with the Maklouf portrait of the Queen introduced in 1985, the 1984 $1 is the only issued $1 bearing the Machin portrait. Thus, it is an utterly unique type in the Australian decimal series!
Importantly, the $1 was unveiled in May of 1984, meaning this one-year-only type was issued too late to be included in the 1984 Proof Set. Thus, collectors were denied the chance to secure this one-year-only type struck to the finest possible quality. An inspired initiative, the Royal Australian Mint overcame this problem by issuing the 1984 Roos $1 individually – struck to immaculate Proof standard!
Your chance to own this pioneering issue in flawless quality, we have the 1984 $1 Mob of Roos Proof available at a sensational price! Click add to cart now!
