A striking piece of Australian banknote history, the 1985 $50 Johnston/Fraser issue with OCR-B style serial numbers exemplifies the transition into modern, machine-readable print technology. Its clean, precise typography stands in contrast to the traditional Gothic style of earlier issues.
Bearing the portraits of Sir Howard Walter Florey and Sir Ian Clunies Ross, the note celebrates two towering figures of Australian science and medicine. Every detailโfrom engraving to colour balanceโspeaks to the quality of this paper issue before the polymer era.
